3-Day Rift Valley Safari – Hell’s Gate Naivasha & Nakuru

Your Rift Valley safari departs Nairobi mid-morning, driving northwest along the road that climbs over the escarpment with its sweeping views of the Rift Valley floor spread below. A short stop at the viewpoint above the escarpment allows for photographs of the valley’s extraordinary width and the distant shimmer of Lakes Naivasha and Elementaita on the valley floor. You descend into the valley and head directly to Hell’s Gate National Park, arriving in time for an activity-packed afternoon. Hell’s Gate is one of Kenya’s most distinctive national parks where vehicles are not the primary way to explore: cyclists and walkers freely enter the gorge alongside zebra, buffalo, warthog, and giraffe in a thrilling open-air wildlife experience. Your guide leads you on a walking and cycling exploration of the gorge, passing Fischer’s Tower, a volcanic column rising dramatically from the valley floor, and venturing into the inner gorge where geothermal steam vents, colourful hot springs, and carved red-rock walls create a landscape of primal beauty. After the active afternoon, you drive the short distance to your Lake Naivasha lodge, checking in as hippos begin grazing on the lawn at dusk.

Begin the day with a Lake Naivasha boat safari at dawn, when the light is softest and the birdlife most active along the papyrus-fringed shores. Your guide navigates through the hippo pools where large pods of these enormous mammals yawn and submerge in the still morning water, and past Crescent Island where giraffe and zebra can be observed from the boat. African fish eagles call from their perches in the yellow fever trees as African darters dry their wings on dead branches and pelicans glide in formation over the lake surface. After returning to the lodge for a full breakfast, you check out and drive north to Nakuru town, entering Lake Nakuru National Park for a full afternoon game drive. The flamingos of Lake Nakuru are a world-famous spectacle, with their pink masses concentrated along the southern and western shores of the alkaline lake. Your guide also navigates the prime rhino areas of the park, where both black and white rhino have been successfully bred and released as part of Kenya’s conservation programmes, and targets the Euphorbia candelabrum forest where leopards retreat from the midday heat, before checking in to your Nakuru lodge for the night.

An early morning game drive around Lake Nakuru captures the park in the golden dawn light as flamingos feed in the shallows and predators return from nocturnal hunts. This is the ideal time for spotting lions resting on open grass after a night’s activity, leopards returning to their tree hideouts, and the dramatic aerial display of bateleur eagles riding thermals above the lake. Rothschild giraffe, one of Africa’s rarest giraffe subspecies with only around 2,000 individuals remaining, are regularly seen in the park’s open woodland alongside Defassa waterbuck, reedbuck, and large herds of Cape buffalo. After the morning drive and a final lodge breakfast, you check out and drive the approximately two hours back to Nairobi, arriving by early afternoon with three days of varied Rift Valley wildlife and adventure experiences.
