In this guide
Choosing where to stay in Tsavo starts with your route. Tsavo East and Tsavo West offer different accommodation locations, and a camp name alone does not tell you how it fits the journey. Compare the park section, room type and overnight stops before choosing between a tented camp, a lodge or a self-catering stay.
This guide compares accommodation examples for a private safari. A property described here is not a guaranteed inclusion in a Rustic Nature Tours package: your confirmed arrangements specify the accommodation, room category, meal plan and dates.
Choose Tsavo East or Tsavo West first
Begin with the places included in your itinerary and the nights allocated to each park. A stay in Tsavo West does not also provide an overnight base in Tsavo East. When a route includes both, check where the transfer falls and which property is assigned to each night.
Our four-day Tsavo East and West safari is a private road journey in a 4×4, starting and ending in Nairobi. Its three nights comprise two in Tsavo West and one in Tsavo East. This is a useful starting point for comparing a stay in each park; the confirmed booking determines the actual lodges or camps.
Access depends on the route, gate, property and current conditions. Avoid choosing accommodation from a fixed driving-time claim alone. Your travel dates and the day’s programme also affect how a transfer fits around the stay.

Tsavo East camps and lodges
Satao Camp
Satao is a tented camp in Tsavo East, arranged around a waterhole. It offers an example of a canvas-tent stay rather than a conventional lodge room. The waterhole setting describes the location; it does not guarantee a particular animal, herd size or sighting during your visit.
Ashnil Aruba Lodge
Ashnil Aruba is in Tsavo East near Aruba Dam and offers both rooms and tents. Compare the actual category offered in your booking: describing the property as a lodge does not mean every guest is allocated the same type of room or tent.
Sentrim Tsavo
Sentrim Tsavo is inside Tsavo East and has canvas tents and stone-walled rooms. It provides another option when comparing accommodation formats. Establish which format and rooming arrangement is offered for your party before confirming the stay.
Galdessa Camp
Galdessa Camp lies beside the Galana River in Tsavo East and is offered on an exclusive-use basis. That is a different booking arrangement from reserving an individual room in a larger lodge. Party size, the property allocation and the full stay arrangements matter when considering it for a private safari.
Tsavo West camps and lodges
Finch Hattons
Finch Hattons is a luxury tented camp in Tsavo West, set around natural springs. Its accommodation is in tented suites. A supplier’s list of activities does not establish what is included in your safari, so check any additional activity against your confirmed programme.
Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge
Kilaguni Serena is a stone-built lodge in Tsavo West with a waterhole setting. It is an example for travellers who prefer a lodge room or suite to a canvas tent. Room categories differ, and the property setting should not be read as a promise of wildlife sightings.
Severin Safari Camp
Severin Safari Camp is in Tsavo West and offers tents and suites. Compare the specific category, meal plan and room allocation proposed for your party. A camp’s general facilities or activities should not be assumed to apply to every category or to be included in every safari.
Tented stays, lodge rooms and self-catering
A tented camp can offer furnished accommodation under canvas; the word “tent” alone does not establish the facilities, room capacity or price. Equally, a lodge name does not establish that every room has the same layout or amenities. Compare the actual accommodation category, beds, bathroom arrangements and meals offered for your dates.
Private budget accommodation is also an option. At Severin, the Kitani Bandas are separate self-catering accommodation with kitchenettes, and a vehicle is required to reach them. They should be considered separately from a stay in the main safari camp. Self-catering changes the meal arrangements: establish how food, preparation and transport fit into your private itinerary.
For families or travellers with particular access requirements, the selected room and property arrangements need to meet those requirements. A broad label such as “family-friendly” or “luxury” does not establish suitable bed arrangements, step-free access or eligibility for an activity.
Match the stay to your private safari
Check the full overnight sequence before adding Tsavo to a longer circuit. Our eight-day Kenya safari is a private 4×4 road itinerary with seven nights: two in Maasai Mara, two at Lake Naivasha, two in Amboseli and one in Tsavo West, followed by the return to Nairobi. It does not include an overnight stay in Tsavo East or finish on the coast.
The Lake Naivasha boat ride and Crescent Island walk are included on that Naivasha-visiting itinerary. Maasai village visits are optional. Drinking water is included; accommodation choices and other services follow the confirmed safari arrangements.
Night drives, guided walks, cultural visits and other supplier activities are not automatic inclusions because a property advertises them. Access, age requirements, availability, charges and the actual safari programme govern whether an activity can be arranged.
When planning your private safari, provide the travel dates, party size, ages of children, preferred rooming and any accommodation requirements. Compare the proposed park nights, property, room category and meal plan together. Current availability and the confirmed arrangements determine the stay.
Tsavo accommodation FAQs
Should I stay in Tsavo East or Tsavo West?
Choose the section that matches your itinerary’s visits and overnight sequence. If the journey includes both parks, check the nights assigned to each and the transfer between them. Our four-day private Tsavo itinerary allocates two nights to West and one to East.
What is the difference between a tented camp and a lodge?
A tented camp uses canvas accommodation, while a lodge can offer built rooms or suites. Some properties offer more than one format. The category in your confirmed booking determines the room or tent, beds, bathroom arrangements and meals; the property’s name alone does not establish them.
Is self-catering accommodation an option in Tsavo?
Yes. Kitani Bandas at Severin are a specific Tsavo West self-catering example with kitchenettes, separate from the main camp and requiring vehicle access. Food, preparation, transfers and the rest of the private programme need to be arranged for that type of stay.
Does a lodge stay include night drives or guided walks?
These activities are not automatically included. A property’s advertised activities must be checked against your booked programme, current access rules, age requirements, availability and any additional charges. Only the activities specified in the confirmed arrangements form part of the safari.
What determines which lodge or camp is confirmed?
The route, overnight allocation, travel dates, availability, party size, children’s ages, rooming and accommodation requirements determine the proposal. Your confirmed arrangements identify the property, room category and meal plan. The examples in this guide do not guarantee an allocation or a price.
