4-Day Mara & Nakuru Safari – Lions Leopards & Pink Flamingos

Your Mara and Nakuru safari begins with an early morning departure from your Nairobi hotel in a private 4×4 safari vehicle. The road southwest carries you through the Rift Valley escarpment with its sweeping views before descending into the Mara ecosystem. After approximately five to six hours of driving with a refreshment stop, you arrive at your Maasai Mara lodge in time for a welcome lunch. Departing the lodge before sunrise, your guide drives toward prime predator territories as the grasslands emerge from darkness in the golden dawn light. Morning lion sightings are common as prides emerge from overnight hunts, and cheetah are frequently spotted on termite mounds surveying their territories in the clear early air. The Mara River drive offers close-up views of hippo pods, Nile crocodiles, and the enormous variety of water birds that congregate along its banks. During migration season between July and October, the river is the stage for the legendary wildebeest crossings that draw wildlife photographers from across the world. There is no morning game drive in the Mara today, as an early start is important to make the most of the journey and arrive at Nakuru in time for an afternoon game drive. The route passes through Narok town and climbs back through the Rift Valley escarpment, with the landscape transitioning from the Mara’s open grasslands to the highlands of central Kenya. After a lunch stop en route, you descend into the Rift Valley floor and arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park in the early afternoon. Your Nakuru guide collects you at the gate for an afternoon game drive through the park’s acacia woodland and open grasslands surrounding the famous alkaline lake. Flamingos gather in their thousands along the shoreline, their pink plumage creating one of Kenya’s most visually stunning wildlife spectacles. The park is also home to both black and white rhinos, and your guide navigates the best areas for locating these endangered giants in the late afternoon light before checking in to the Nakuru lodge.

Rise for an early morning game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park before the heat builds and wildlife retreats into the shade. The morning hours are excellent for sighting leopards in the yellow fever acacia trees that line the lake shore, and for observing the full diversity of Nakuru’s bird life, which includes African fish eagles, yellow-billed storks, great white pelicans, and vast numbers of lesser and greater flamingos wading in the shallows. Rothschild giraffe, one of Africa’s rarest giraffe subspecies, roam the open grasslands above the lake, while troops of olive baboon forage noisily through the fig trees. After the morning drive, you return to the lodge for a final breakfast before checking out and beginning the approximately two-hour drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early afternoon.
