4-Day Amboseli & Chyulu Hills Safari – Volcanoes & Elephants

Your Amboseli Chyulu Hills safari begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi, driving south along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway before turning toward Amboseli National Park. The four-hour drive passes through Maasai rangelands with Mount Kilimanjaro gradually appearing on the southern horizon, its snow-capped summit glistening above the cloud line. Upon arrival at your safari lodge near the park, you enjoy lunch with stunning mountain views before heading out for an afternoon game drive. Amboseli’s open landscape provides exceptional visibility, and your guide navigates toward the marshlands and springs where elephant families congregate in large numbers. The afternoon light illuminates the dust clouds raised by moving herds, creating atmospheric scenes against the Kilimanjaro backdrop. You also encounter zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, and the resident lion pride before returning to the lodge for dinner.

A full day exploring Amboseli National Park on morning and afternoon game drives. The early morning start is timed to coincide with clear Kilimanjaro views, and your guide positions you at the best vantage points for observing the park’s famous large-tusked elephants against the mountain panorama. After breakfast, you depart Amboseli and drive north toward the Chyulu Hills National Park, a journey of approximately two hours through Maasai community lands with views of the volcanic hills rising from the plains. The Chyulu Hills are one of Africa’s youngest volcanic ranges, formed just 500 years ago, and their striking green ridges contrast dramatically with the surrounding dry savannah. Upon arrival, you settle into your lodge and enjoy lunch before an afternoon dedicated to exploring the volcanic landscape. A guided nature walk takes you across lava flows dotted with pioneer vegetation, past extinct volcanic cones, and to the entrance of the Leviathan lava tube, one of the longest cave systems in Africa. Inside the cave, your guide illuminates the dramatic chambers and passages carved by ancient lava rivers. The walk also offers spectacular panoramic views from the Chyulu ridgeline, where on clear days you can see both Kilimanjaro to the south and the Tsavo plains stretching east to the distant coast.

Enjoy a final breakfast at the Chyulu Hills lodge as morning light washes over the green volcanic ridges. After breakfast, you check out and begin the drive back to Nairobi. The route passes through scenic Maasai country before joining the Nairobi-Mombasa highway for the approximately four-hour drive to the capital. You arrive in Nairobi by early afternoon, carrying extraordinary memories of two of Kenya’s most contrasting and spectacular parks, from the elephant-filled plains of Amboseli to the volcanic wonders of the Chyulu Hills.
