3-Day Tsavo East & Diani Beach – Wildlife to Indian Ocean

Your Tsavo East Diani adventure begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi, heading southeast along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway into the vast Tsavo ecosystem. The 240-kilometre drive takes approximately four hours, passing through flat acacia savannah before entering the park through the Voi gate. Your guide drives you across the sun-baked plains to your lodge for welcome lunch overlooking a waterhole where elephants are likely already drinking. The afternoon game drive explores the Aruba Dam area and Voi River circuit, prime territory for observing the park’s legendary large-tusked elephant bulls, as well as lion prides resting beneath spreading fig trees, giraffe browsing the tallest acacias, and the enormous crocodiles and hippos inhabiting the Tsavo River pools. After breakfast and a short morning game drive to catch the best of Tsavo East in the early light, you depart southward through the park and continue to the Kenya coast. The approximately three-hour drive from Tsavo to Diani passes through coastal lowlands lush with mango and palm trees before arriving at the brilliant white shores of Diani Beach in the early afternoon. Check into your beachfront accommodation where the turquoise Indian Ocean stretches to the horizon and the contrast with the morning’s red dust savannah could not be more dramatic or delightful. Spend the afternoon swimming in the warm clear water, snorkelling over the nearby coral reef to discover tropical fish and sea turtles, or simply reclining on the perfect beach with a fresh coconut in hand. Dinner is best enjoyed at one of Diani’s excellent beachside restaurants where fresh lobster, grilled kingfish, and prawn curry are local specialties served to the sound of the waves.

The return drive north to Nairobi from Diani takes approximately six hours through the coastal hinterland and along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, arriving in Nairobi by early evening.
