Itinerary
Your Kenya loop safari begins with a morning departure from Nairobi heading southeast on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. After approximately four hours, you enter Tsavo East National Park, Africa’s largest national park, at the Mtito Andei gate. The vast red laterite plains of Tsavo East stretch endlessly under the African sky, broken by the green ribbon of the Galana River and the iconic Mudanda Rock. You arrive at your lodge for lunch and head out for an afternoon game drive along the Galana River, where large elephant herds are regularly seen bathing and drinking. The Tsavo lion, famous for its distinctive maneless appearance, is a prize sighting along with buffalo, lesser kudu, and large crocodile.
Safari Lodge
After breakfast in Tsavo East, you drive west to Tsavo West National Park, a landscape of dramatic volcanic scenery, crystal-clear springs, and diverse wildlife. En route you stop at Mzima Springs, a magical freshwater oasis fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro’s snowmelt where hippos and crocodiles can be observed through an underwater viewing chamber. Tsavo West’s volcanic terrain of ancient lava flows and caves gives the landscape a surreal quality, while cheetah, rhino, and lion are among the wildlife found in greater density here. Afternoon game drives explore the Shetani lava flow and the palm-fringed waterholes where large herds of elephant gather at dusk.
Safari Lodge
Depart Tsavo West after breakfast for the scenic drive south to Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The road crosses the border zone between the two parks offering stunning open country views before entering Amboseli’s unique ecosystem of dried lake bed, swamps, and volcanic dust plains. Check in to your lodge with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and enjoy lunch before an afternoon game drive through the marshlands and open grasslands. Amboseli is famous for its large-tusked elephant herds, and the combination of elephants, zebra, and wildebeest moving across the plains with Africa’s highest mountain in the background creates some of the most iconic wildlife images on the continent.
Safari Lodge
Spend a full day in Amboseli National Park on morning and afternoon game drives for the best chance to photograph Mount Kilimanjaro. The early morning light on Kilimanjaro is spectacular, illuminating the snowfields and glaciers above the clouds as elephant silhouettes move across the dusty plains. Your guide visits the observation hill overlooking the swamps, where hippos bathe in the springs and herons stalk through the shallows. Lion, cheetah, and spotted hyena are regularly encountered on the open grasslands, while over 400 bird species including the bold grey crowned crane add color and movement throughout the day.
Safari Lodge
After breakfast, you depart Amboseli heading north on the long drive to Lake Nakuru National Park in the heart of the Rift Valley. The route passes through the agricultural belt of Nairobi’s outskirts before climbing into the Rift Valley highlands. You arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park in the early afternoon and enter a world of dramatic lakeside scenery where the shallows are often stained pink by thousands of lesser flamingos. The afternoon game drive explores the lakeshore circuits, with white rhino commonly spotted in the grasslands, lions in the fever tree forest, and waterbuck and buffalo along the lake margins.
Safari Lodge
A full day in Lake Nakuru National Park reveals one of Kenya’s most visually dramatic parks. Morning game drives follow the lakeshore where the flamingo concentrations shift with the alkalinity of the water, sometimes creating a pink sea stretching to the horizon. The park supports both black and white rhino, and your guide tracks these endangered animals through the woodland and grassland habitats. Leopard are frequently spotted in the yellow fever tree forest, while the lake’s cliffs provide a roost for Verreaux’s eagle and other raptors. The afternoon drive explores the higher ground for panoramic lake views before returning to the lodge for a final Nakuru evening.
Safari Lodge
After breakfast at the Nakuru lodge, you drive south to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake set among yellow fever trees in the heart of the Rift Valley. The short two-hour drive arrives at the lake by midday, and after lunch at your lakeside camp you enjoy an afternoon boat safari on the glassy waters. Your guide navigates among pods of hippopotamus while an extraordinary variety of waterbirds including African fish eagle, pied kingfisher, African darter, and pelicans are observed at close range. The papyrus shores of Naivasha are also home to large numbers of colobus monkey and bushbuck, and the evening light on the lake is magnificent.
Lakeside Camp
After an early breakfast at Lake Naivasha, you begin the long but scenic drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The route climbs out of the Rift Valley through the dramatic Mau Escarpment before descending onto the vast Mara plains. You arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and head out immediately for an afternoon game drive through the heart of the reserve. The Mara’s open grasslands provide exceptional visibility for spotting lion prides, elephant herds, buffalo, cheetah, and the myriad plains game species that make this the greatest wildlife show on Earth.
Safari Lodge
Rise for a final sunrise game drive in the Maasai Mara, capturing the golden morning light over the savannah before your long return journey to Nairobi. The morning hours are prime for predator activity, and your guide focuses on lion and cheetah sightings before the heat of the day. After the game drive and a hearty breakfast at the lodge, you check out and begin the drive back to Nairobi through the Mau Escarpment and the Rift Valley, arriving in the capital by early evening to conclude this extraordinary Kenya loop safari.
