7-Day Mt Kenya Hike & Samburu Safari – Summit Then Safari

7 Days 6 Nights

Overview

A journey from the glaciated summit of Mount Kenya to the semi-arid wildlife haven of Samburu National Reserve is one of the most dramatic and satisfying adventure safari combinations available anywhere in Africa, taking you from the highest trekking peak on the continent’s second-tallest mountain to intimate encounters with rare wildlife species found nowhere else on the planet. This 7-day adventure begins on the slopes of Mount Kenya, where the Sirimon route leads through montane forest and afro-alpine moorland to the summit plateau where the ice fields of Point Lenana at 4985 metres offer a sunrise perspective that rewards every aching muscle of the climb. The mountain experience is physical, meditative, and deeply connected to the natural world, from the calls of Jackson’s francolin in the bamboo forest to the surreal beauty of giant senecios standing like ancient gods in the misty moorland at 4000 metres. The transition to Samburu National Reserve three days later creates one of the most striking geographic and ecological contrasts in any safari itinerary, dropping from glacial temperatures and alpine vegetation to the warm, rust-red, semi-arid landscapes of Kenya’s northern frontier where the Ewaso Nyiro River attracts extraordinary wildlife to its banks. Samburu is celebrated across Kenya’s safari world for its exclusive Special Five, a collection of five rare wildlife species endemic to northern Kenya including the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich, all of which are completely absent from the country’s more visited southern parks. Your three days in Samburu provide deep immersion in this unique ecosystem, with four expert-guided game drives along the river and through the acacia woodland and volcanic terrain where large elephant herds, crocodiles, leopards, and lion prides adapted to the arid conditions create a wildlife spectacle that rivals anything in East Africa. The combination of physical challenge, alpine scenery, rare wildlife, and the satisfaction of a summit reached and a different kind of wilderness explored makes this 7-day Mt Kenya and Samburu adventure one of the most memorable safari experiences available in Kenya.

Highly recommend Kelvin of Rustic Nature Tours. We saw his great reviews on Facebook. We wanted to be in a small group and to visit the elephants orphanage and giraffe santiary in Nairobi. Kevin delivered all this and took us to a wonderful community project making beautiful beads. We highly recommend Kelvin and his professionalism.

We wanted to be in a small group and wanted to do a half day tour to experience the amazing elephant orphanage in Nairobi National Park and the giraffes sanctuary. We also didn’t want to have to go out too early having only just arrived. Kelvin of ‘Rustic Nature Tours’ delivered this all perfectly for us. A she took us to a community project supporting local women with making beautiful beads which was wonderful. He was very knowledgable and interesting and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and this company. They also do all sorts of Safaris so we will contact him again when we return. PS please note separate to any tour booking the guest must pay a park fee per person and it’s best to do this in advance via the National park website

Found Rustic tours via a recommendation on Facebook as I needed a Nairobi layover tour guide. Contacted Kelvin and we agreed quickly on what to do and see. He picked us up on airport in the morning in his crazy safari car and we saw downtown, giraffes and we did the Nairobi safari. Got to day that I laughed a lot with Kelvin as he is a great person! He did everything he could so we could see as much as possible in our short time window. See you again my friend!

Had a long layover and booked this last minute. So glad I did! Nicole kept our bags in the car and took us back to the airport after the drive. What a drive! Saw a family of rhinos and a pride of lions. Nicole also recommended a Kenyan cuisine restaurant when we asked. She was very knowledgeable, funny, and we really enjoyed our time with her and the tour. Recommend to everyone

What a fantastic day tour to Nairobi National Park, Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage, and a surprise garden lunch. Our guide, Calvin, a top notch birder and guide paced the day perfectly and provided us with an excellent experience! We have travelled to Kenya multiple times, but our private tour with Rustic Nature Tours and Calvin in particular ranks as a highlight among our experiences.

The sights were once in a lifetime - elephant orphanage and giraffe sanctuary worth a trip to Nairobi. Kelvin, our guide, was great - picked us up on time, pointed out animals on the way, was full of information. Will refer any friends visiting Nairobi his way!
