A landscape of contrasts
KWS describes an ecosystem of open grassland, woodland, bushland and wetlands. The changing habitats make it useful to look beyond a single species or sighting.
Ask your guide to include a variety of landscapes in your drive. Pause to look at the setting and the animals’ behaviour, rather than working through a fixed checklist.
Wildlife on the open plains
Alongside elephants, Kenya Tourism Board identifies wildebeest, zebra and impala on Amboseli’s plains. Take time with these herds: their movement and the surrounding landscape are part of the experience.
Tell your guide which animals interest you. The day’s route can respond to conditions while staying within the park’s permitted access.
Birdwatching and the lake basin
The lake basin and wetlands are part of Amboseli’s birdwatching appeal. Bird presence and viewing conditions change with water levels and season.
Bring binoculars and share your birding interests when planning. If you need specialist guiding, confirm that service and its cost before booking.
Photograph the whole scene
Allow room for broad landscapes as well as individual animals. Light, dust, cloud and the animals’ movements change the photographs available on each drive.
Tell us about your camera equipment and the number of travellers. Confirm vehicle space and your preferred pace in the quotation.
Keep the visit within park rules
Stay on permitted routes, give animals space and leave the vehicle only in designated areas. Follow your guide’s briefing and KWS instructions.
Choose a trip by its current itinerary, duration and accommodation arrangements. Any Maasai village visit is optional and should be listed separately in your quote.
