What is the six-day route and night allocation

The road safari runs from Nairobi to the Mount Kenya foothills, Samburu National Reserve, Meru National Park and back to Nairobi. The five nights are one in the foothills, two in the Samburu area and two in the Meru area.

What happens during the Mount Kenya foothills stay

Day one is a scenic road journey through the central highlands followed by an afternoon at the foothills accommodation. This is a geographic foothills stay. Mount Kenya National Park entry, forest or moorland game drives, guided mountain walks, trekking and climbing are not included. Day two continues to Samburu without a highland morning game drive.

Which game drives are included

Samburu has an arrival-afternoon drive on day two, morning and afternoon drives on day three and a final morning drive on day four. Meru has an arrival-afternoon drive on day four, morning and afternoon drives on day five and a final morning drive on day six. Drives follow permitted park or reserve vehicle routes.

Which accommodation and vehicle options are available

Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury accommodation options are available, with a private Land Cruiser 4x4 or Safari Minivan. The quotation identifies the selected properties and their locations, vehicle, dates and party, and the price for those arrangements. These options do not necessarily have the same price.

Which meals are included

Full-board arrangements apply to the five-night safari. The native daily meal plan includes lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast, lunch and dinner on days two to five, and breakfast on day six.

Are wildlife sightings guaranteed

No particular animal or sighting is guaranteed. Game drives follow the animals encountered, permitted routes and current park instructions. The included wildlife-viewing activities are vehicle-based game drives in Samburu and Meru.

Day 01 :

Nairobi to the Mount Kenya Foothills

The safari leaves Nairobi and travels north through the central highlands to the Mount Kenya foothills. The changing countryside and the highland overnight form the opening stage of the journey. The afternoon is spent at the foothills accommodation, with time to relax before the onward journey to Samburu. This first night places the party in the Mount Kenya region before the programme continues into the dry northern landscape the following day.

Day 02 :

Mount Kenya Foothills to Samburu National Reserve

The party leaves the foothills and continues towards Samburu National Reserve. The landscape changes from highland countryside to the dry northern plains and riverine habitats around the Ewaso Nyiro. After arrival, an afternoon private game drive begins the Samburu wildlife-viewing programme. The guide follows authorised reserve routes through the river corridor and adjoining acacia country, pausing at the wildlife encountered for observation and photography. This is the first of two Samburu nights.

Day 03 :

Full Day Samburu Game Drives

Morning and afternoon game drives provide a full day in Samburu National Reserve. The river corridor and its woodland offer a different setting from the surrounding open country and dry acacia habitats. Your guide follows permitted routes and adjusts the viewing stops to the animals and birds encountered, allowing time to observe their behaviour and the landscape around them. The two drives explore the reserve at different times of day before the second Samburu night.

Day 04 :

Samburu to Meru National Park

A final morning game drive completes the Samburu stage before the journey continues to Meru National Park. The afternoon programme introduces Meru with a game drive through its mixture of bush, open grassland and riverine habitats. The guide follows the park’s permitted vehicle routes, using the wildlife encountered to shape the viewing stops. This arrival drive begins a different wildlife setting after Samburu’s drier river landscape and precedes the first of two Meru nights.

Day 05 :

Full Day Meru National Park

Morning and afternoon game drives explore Meru National Park. The programme moves between the park’s bush, grassland and water-associated habitats on permitted routes practical for the safari base. Viewing stops allow time to observe the mammals and birds encountered and to understand how the vegetation and waterways influence their movements. These separate drives provide a full wildlife-viewing day within Meru before the final overnight of the safari.

Day 06 :

Meru National Park to Nairobi

The final day begins with a morning game drive in Meru National Park. Your guide follows the park’s permitted routes for another opportunity to watch its wildlife and photograph the landscape before departure. The party then leaves Meru for the private road journey back to Nairobi. The Nairobi return completes the six-day route after one Mount Kenya foothills night, two Samburu nights and two Meru nights.
