Know Your Gates

Maasai Mara Gate Guide

The Maasai Mara has five main entry gates. Your gate determines your route from Nairobi, drive time, and which wildlife areas you’ll access first.

Sekenani Gate

The most popular entry point — closest to Nairobi (5 hrs via Narok). Tarmac road most of the way. Best concentration of lodges nearby across all budget levels.

260 km from Nairobi   ~5 hours

Talek Gate

Central location offering excellent access to the Talek River crossings — prime Great Migration territory. Close to Talek town for supplies.

280 km from Nairobi   ~5.5 hours

Oloolaimutia Gate

Eastern entry, slightly less trafficked. Ideal for budget lodges in the conservancies along the Mara Triangle border. Scenic Loita Hills route.

275 km from Nairobi   ~5.5 hours

Musiara Gate

Northwestern entry near the Musiara Marsh — one of Africa’s richest predator zones. Home to the “Big Cat Diary” territory. Top luxury camps nearby including Governors’ Camp collection.

Best accessed by air   45 min flight

Sand River Gate

Southern entry near the Tanzania border and the Sand River — a major wildebeest crossing point during the Great Migration. Remote, exclusive feel with several premium camps.

Best accessed by air   45 min flight
Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit the Maasai Mara

The Mara delivers incredible wildlife year-round, but each season offers a distinct experience. Choose based on your priorities.

Peak Season

July – October

The Great Migration river crossings at the Mara River — nature’s greatest spectacle. Dry weather means animals concentrate near water. Best predator action.

Wildlife: Exceptional
Weather: Dry, 20–28°C
Rates: Highest season
Crowds: High — book early

Shoulder Season

June & Nov – Dec

Our top recommendation. Excellent wildlife, fewer vehicles, and 15–25% lower rates. June sees early migration arrivals; November offers short rains with dramatic skies.

Wildlife: Very good
Weather: Mixed, 18–27°C
Rates: 15–25% off peak
Crowds: Moderate

Green Season

January – May

Lush green landscapes perfect for photography. Newborn animals in February–April. Excellent birding with migratory species. Best rates of the year — up to 40% off.

Wildlife: Good (resident)
Weather: Rainy, 16–25°C
Rates: 30–40% off peak
Crowds: Very low

Safety & Health

The Mara is a malaria zone — prophylaxis recommended (consult your doctor). Yellow fever vaccination required for Kenya entry. Stay in your vehicle during game drives. Follow your guide’s instructions at all times. Lodges have first-aid trained staff and RFDS evacuation protocols.

Photography Tips

Bring a zoom lens (100-400mm ideal), shoot during golden hours (first/last light), use burst mode for action shots, keep ISO flexible for shaded areas, bring a beanbag for steady vehicle shots, and always charge batteries the night before. Most lodges have charging stations.

Budget Planning

Games-Drive Fees: $80–200/person/day
Park Entry: From $100/adult, $50/child per 12 hours.
Tips: $10–20/day for guide, $5–10/day for lodge staff
Extras: Balloon safari ($500), cultural visits ($20–50)
Visa: Kenya eTA — $30 online

The Big Five & Beyond

The Mara is one of the best places on Earth to see the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Plus cheetah (highest density in Africa), hippo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hyena, and over 450 bird species. A 3-night stay gives you excellent chances of seeing them all.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend a minimum of 3 nights / 2 full days for a rewarding safari. This gives you 4 game drives and excellent chances of seeing the Big Five. For the Great Migration (July–October), 4–5 nights is ideal to witness river crossings. Photography enthusiasts often stay 5–7 nights.
Yes, the Maasai Mara is one of Africa’s safest safari destinations. All lodges have trained guides and strict safety protocols. You’ll always be accompanied by an experienced guide during game drives. The main precautions are: stay in your vehicle, don’t walk between rooms at night without an escort, and take malaria prophylaxis.
Absolutely! Popular combinations include: Maasai Mara + Amboseli (elephants with Kilimanjaro backdrop), Mara + Lake Nakuru (flamingos and rhinos), Mara + Diani Beach (safari + beach). We also offer multi-destination Kenya safari packages that combine the best destinations.
Conservancies are private wildlife areas bordering the National Reserve, managed by partnerships between lodges and Maasai landowners. Benefits include: off-road driving (closer to animals), night drives, walking safaris, fewer vehicles per sighting, and cultural visits. They’re available mostly at mid-range and luxury price points and are highly recommended.
Most nationalities need a Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) which can be applied for online at etakenya.go.ke. Cost is $30 and processing takes 3–5 business days. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates with at least 2 blank pages.
This varies by category: Budget: typically room and meals only. Mid-range: often full board (all meals), sometimes game drives. Luxury: usually all-inclusive (meals, drinks, 2 daily game drives, laundry, conservancy fees). Always confirm inclusions when booking — we can clarify this for any lodge.
While technically possible with a domestic flight, we don’t recommend it. The 5-hour drive each way makes road day trips impractical. A day trip by air gives you only 4–5 hours in the park. The Mara truly rewards those who stay at least 2–3 nights — early mornings and late afternoons are when the magic happens.
Yes! The Mara is excellent for family safaris. Most mid-range and luxury lodges welcome children (some have minimum age requirements for game drives, typically 5–7 years). Look for lodges with: swimming pools, family rooms/tents, kids’ safari programs, and flexible meal times. We can recommend the best family-friendly options.
You can enquire through our form below or contact us directly. We handle all reservations and logistics. Cancellation policies vary by lodge but typically: 60+ days: full refund minus admin fee. 30–60 days: 50% refund. Under 30 days: no refund. We strongly recommend travel insurance.
Kenya uses the Kenya Shilling (KES), but US Dollars are widely accepted at lodges and for park fees. Most mid-range and luxury lodges accept credit cards (Visa/Mastercard), though some budget lodges are cash-only. ATMs are available in Narok town. We recommend carrying some USD cash for tips and small purchases.
